Although it's now officially fall, it probably won't feel like it in Austin until the end of October (or later—the leaves didn't really start changing until December last year), so my summer mix is relevant for at least one more month. I've found that these songs are best listened to driving through your favorite city in the rain or back home late at night with the windows down.

Until next time.

Monthly Mix: May 2016

Here we are at the beginning of another month, wondering again how we got here already. Is it just me, or does it feel like the first half of the year goes by so much faster than the second? I'm sure I've said the same thing in reverse before, but I swear it was just New Years!

The weather has been amazing lately and all of Austin has been taking advantage of it, including me. I'm hoping to take a long walk around Lady Bird Lake and go kayaking again in the next few weeks, before it gets too hot (because, unfortunately, that's coming soon). I have been spending many weekends and evenings reading or blogging, listening to music, and sipping cold drinks on various patios around Austin. Here's a mix to help keep the weekend vibes going into Monday.

  1. Water – Ra Ra Riot & Rostam
  2. Taro – alt-J
  3. Someday Soon – KT Tunstall
  4. Bros – Wolf Alice
  5. Look What I Made – Last Good Tooth
  6. Simple Song – The Shins
  7. Lunar Sea – Camera Obscura
  8. Don't Just Sit There – Lucius
  9. Brazil – Declan McKenna
  10. Crawl – Bear Lake
  11. Sedona – Houndmouth
  12. My Only Swerving – El Ten Eleven
  13. Jackrabbit – San Fermin
  14. Coffee – Sylvan Esso
  15. Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse – Minus the Bear
  16. Vagabond – Wolfmother
  17. Tenuousness – Andrew Bird
  18. River – Leon Bridges
I just checked and I haven't posted a mix since about a week after I moved to Austin. (So not only has it been a year and a half since I've posted a mix, but I've lived in Austin for a year and a half, which is NUTS, but I digress.) Despite the name, my mixes have never been "monthly," but even I will admit it's getting a little out of hand at this point. I'll get the hang of this eventually.

Have a good week, all!

  15. These Waters – Ben Howard
  16. Empress of the North – The Moondoggies
  17. Blue Mind – Alexi Murdoch
  18. Warm Foothills – alt-J
My October mix is a little late because all of October was devoted to moving–packing, loading trailers, saying goodbyes, crying, and unpacking. (Also, we don't have Internet set up at our apartment yet, so any down time I've had has been spent watching Will &Grace.) I could have just pretended this was my November mix, but it doesn't have the right feel to it. (Also, I already wrote "October 2014" on all the mixes I still haven't sent out.)

More on being an official Austin resident (!!!) later. For now, enjoy this music and go drink some hot chocolate or something.

I hope you enjoy it too, and that your first day of autumn is filled with falling leaves, hot coffee, and gray sweaters.

The quote above is from Jonathan Tropper's One Last Thing Before I Go, which I finished reading while at home a week or so ago. As someone who has taken her fair share of long drives (here's looking at you, six-hour drive to Austin), these lines made me smile. There is a weird sort of camaraderie among people on the highway, isn't there? Maybe that's just me.

Anyway, this particular mix was largely inspired by that quote and my impending seven-hour drive to Colorado Springs next weekend to see Dillon and Shelby. I suppose us bloggers are united by wanderlust, too.

Spring is probably my least favorite time of the year. For some reason, the transition from winter to summer is always worse than from summer to winter. Allergies are going crazy, it's windy all the time–not to mention the "haboobs" that blow through every week. (For those who don't know, a haboob is a massive dust storm. We've had two in less than two weeks. This is what I deal with all the time.)

Regardless of the nasty weather, things have been okay. Summer (and the end of my career as an undergrad) is so close. In the meantime, here's some warm weather music to get you through the windy days of March.

  18. Sloom – Of Monsters and Men
I finished this mix back in December. Why am I just now posting this? (I actually have reason this time, guys. I wasn't just procrastinating.) My cousin and I moved into our house. That took considerable time as I packed and moved everything mostly by myself (which was awful and I would not advise it). Then school started, and I also began training for morning books at work, which meant going in at five in the morning. Aside from all that, and worst of all, we still do not have Wi-Fi at our house yet. It's been a struggle. I feel like Laura Ingalls Wilder.

We also don't have our washer and dryer hooked up yet, so I've brought my laundry over to my grandparents' house and am using their Wi-Fi while I wait for my towels to dry. Expect more updates in re our house and school soon.

I've been looking for a good way to do my mixes for forever, and could never figure out the best way to do it. A lot of the playlist sites I had found before either 1) didn't have the music I needed/a way to upload my own, 2) didn't have a way for me to embed the player in a post, 3) did have a way to embed the player but didn't let me customize it, or 4) just didn't work.

I think I have finally found one that does work though. Hopefully. Now you can actually listen to it as a playlist, and if you really like a song it has a link to buy it. Let me know if this works/what you think!

I just got so busy with the meet-up and all that I never got around to posting it in July. Then I got so busy with, you know, sleeping and reading Harry Potter that I never got around to posting it before the last day of August.

The important thing is that it is posted now. Right? Sure.

Monthly Mix: May 2013

I am aware that it is halfway through June, but you should know by now that I never get things done when I intend to. Like, ever. I hope everyone's summer has been great thus far. Mine has been filled with working, trips home, and a lot of meet-up planning. Just a month until I'm in Austin with some really fabulous people. I can't wait.

Monthly Mix: January 2013

I actually made this mix at the same time as my Christmas mix, but instead of posting two December mixes I saved it for January because I'm kind of lazy. This is one of my favorite mixes I've made. I've been jamming to it for the past few weeks.

Monthly Mix: CHRISTMAS!

Christmas is my very favorite time of the year. I just get so INTO IT. Unfortunately, the first part of the month is spent struggling through the end of the fall semester, but once I finish finals WATCH OUT. Tomorrow (well, today seeing as it's nearly three in the morning) is my last final, and you better believe as soon as I get home I'm going to watch The Muppet Christmas Carol and make snowflakes.

It should come as little surprise to you that I've made a Christmas mix. There are so many people (too many people) that hate Christmas music and I've never understood it. Usually, their main complaint is that it plays literally everywhere through the month of December, but THAT'S THE BEST PART. We only get this music for one month a year, guys! EMBRACE IT.
  1. It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas – Fruit Bats
  2. Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow – Dean Martin
  3. We Need a Little Christmas – AgesandAges
  4. (Everybody's Waitin' For) The Man With the Bag – Black Prairie
  5. All I Want For Christmas Is You – Quiet Company
  6. Baby, It's Cold Outside – Glee Cast
  7. Wonderful Christmastime – The Shins
  8. Are You Coming Over For Christmas? – Belle & Sebastian
  9. Winter Wonderland – Billy Gilman
  10. Angels We Have Heard On High – Quiet Company
  11. Christmas Is Coming – John Denver & The Muppets
  12. The 12 Days of Christmas – Straight No Chaser
  13. All That I Want – The Weepies
  14. The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On an Open Fire) – Paul McCartney
  15. Jingle Bells – Ben Rector
  16. Little Saint Nick – John Denver & The Muppets
  17. White Christmas – Sleeping At Last
  18. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) – Michael Bublé
  19. We Wish You a Merry Christmas – John Denver & The Muppets
  20. O Holy Night – Quiet Company
  21. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas – Sleeping At Last
  22. What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? – The Head and the Heart
  23. Auld Lang Syne – Barenaked Ladies
Honestly, it took a lot to not make this mix every version of "All I Want For Christmas Is You," "Baby, It's Cold Outside," and "Auld Lang Syne" I have. Those are the best.

Monthly Mix: November

Technically my Monthly Mix segment isn't really monthly seeing as my last one was in July. I should rename is to something like Whenever Maggie Actually Gets Around To It Mix, but that's not nearly as catchy.
  1. Towers – Bon Iver
  2. Pull My Heart Away – Jack Penate
  3. Something in the Water – Brooke Fraser
  4. Weighty Ghost – Wintersleep
  5. For Those Below – Mumford & Sons
  6. Heart It Races – Dr. Dog
  7. Take a Walk – Passion Pit
  8. When U Love Somebody – Fruit Bats
  9. The Wolves – Ben Howard
  10. Bloodstream – Stateless
  11. Kissing a Fool – Michael Bublé
  12. Missed the Boat – Modest Mouse
  13. What You Know – Two Door Cinema Club
  14. Give Me Love – Ed Sheeran
  15. You Are a Tourist – Death Cab For Cutie
  16. Blood – The Middle East
  17. Swept Away (Sentimental Version) – The Avett Brothers
  18. I Can't Make You Love Me (Live) – Adele
I'm quite proud of this mix, and I'm glad that I finally finished it because it's been sitting half-made since September. This one will definitely make its way to a few members of the Blogger Family.

As you know, the semester is quickly coming to a close. Somehow, Thanksgiving is next week, and as if that isn't crazy enough, the week after is my friend Mary's wedding. She's the first of my friends to get married and I get to be a bridesmaid! Needless to say, I am thrilled.

This semester has been a struggle–a few ups and a lot of downs to come to terms with. I'll elaborate on that in a later post. Now, I need to focus on making it through these last few weeks of school in one piece.

Hope everyone else is doing well, especially those still in school. I feel your pain! Listen to this mix–it'll make you feel better.

Monthly Mix: July

This month's mix was heavily influenced by my impending trip to Seattle and the evening runs I've been taking in preparation for that 5K I spoke of before.
  1. Old Pine – Ben Howard
  2. Heartbeats – José González
  3. Small Town Moon – Regina Spektor
  4. Take Our Turn – The J Band
  5. Something Good Can Work – Two Door Cinema Club
  6. It's Time – Imagine Dragons
  7. Man On Fire – Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros
  8. Between Two Lungs – Florence + The Machine
  9. The Fear – Ben Howard
  10. Pumped Up Kicks – Foster the People
  11. Six Weeks – Of Monsters and Men
  12. Demons – Imagine Dragons
  13. Sweeter – Gavin DeGraw
  14. Going On – Gnarls Barkley
  15. Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall – Coldplay
  16. The Party – Regina Spektor
  17. Some Nights – fun.
  18. 1901 – Phoenix
  19. Your Ex-Lover Is Dead – Stars
  20. World At Large – Modest Mouse
For some reason, I always thought that workout playlists should consist of a lot of rock and your general LET'S-GET-PUMPED music, but I've found that I enjoy it more when I listen to more mellow music (like I do all of the time anyway). Lately, I've had my Pandora set to a mix of Ben Howard, Regina Spektor, Gavin DeGraw, and Of Monsters and Men.

Speaking of, a few days ago when Amazon was having some crazy 99¢ sale on recently released albums, I bought Of Monsters and Men's My Head Is An Animal because I loved "Little Talks" (and, I mean, it was only 99¢), and I am very pleased with it. Also, after my friend Alissa talking about them incessantly and hearing "It's Time" in The Perks of Being a Wallflower trailer, I downloaded Imagine Dragons's EP, and it is fantastic as well.

New music is the best thing. Well, maybe not the best for my bank account, but whatever.

Monthly Mix: June

Sometimes I will listen to one song and it will inspire me to make a mix CD that I usually end up sending to several of my Blogger Family. It takes me awhile to actually finish these mixes, but I like making them and like to think I am good at it. In reality, I am probably the only one who really enjoys the mixes I make (except for my Fall 2011 mix–that was a masterpiece), but I have decided to share them anyway. So without further ado, here is June.
  1. I Dream An Ocean – Charlene Kaye
  2. All These Things That I've Done – The Killers
  3. Sweet As Whole – Sara Bareilles
  4. On the Road – Keane
  5. Wasted – L.P.
  6. Save Yourself – James Morrison
  7. Addicted to Love – Florence + The Machine
  8. Barlights – fun.
  9. Please Speak Well of Me – The Weepies
  10. Gotta Get Through This (Acoustic) – Daniel Bedingfield
  11. Water's Gettin' Too Hot – TalkFine
  12. Come Back Down – Greg Laswell feat. Sara Bareilles
  13. Preaching to the Choir Invisible, Part 1 – Quiet Company
  14. Firewood – Regina Spektor
  15. Heart of Mine – Norah Jones & The Peter Malick Group
  16. Ulysses – Franz Ferdinand
  17. The Freedom Song – Jason Mraz
  18. All Wash Out – Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros
  19. Born and Raised – John Mayer
The goal is to actually remember to do this every month.
