An Observation

In my years as a college student, I have come to realize that every other week of the semester is hell.

You will have a week where you've nothing to do but class readings. It instills in you a false sense of security. College isn't so bad, you think. I actually have some free time this week. I'll call up that friend I haven't seen since August and we'll go see a movie!

This is your first mistake. Free time is a myth. Like spacious dorm rooms and cheap textbooks, it simply does not exist. You only realize this late Sunday night when it is far too late. While looking at your schedule for the impending week—the two tests, reading quiz, and six-page paper all due within the next five days—you feel the panic set in.

What have I done? you think, head in your hands. Why did I sleep so much this weekend? And that ninety minutes I spent watching Sandra Bullock float around in space? I can never get that back!

After the initial meltdown, you drive to Starbucks to order the first of many lattes. Resigned to the fact that you'll be getting no sleep for the next 120 hours, you down half of your venti white mocha in the first gulp and set to work.

Over the course of the week, you cry a lot. You wear sweats every day. You think of dropping out. You see groups of eager, bright-eyed high schoolers touring the campus and feel the need to yell out, to warn them. Don't do it! It's a trap!

Friday rolls around. You drag yourself to your last class. You are literally crawling to your desk. Your classmates are silent as most of them are already asleep. Others sit alert, eyes twitching from the caffeine pumping through their body. Your professor takes no notice of any of this. His heart has been hardened by years of teaching at the university level, and despite the obvious suffering of his students, he plows through his lecture on the meaning of yellow wallpaper.

You make it through though! You drive home, put on pajamas, and sleep until noon on Saturday. I will not make that mistake again, you think. You check next week's schedule as soon as you wake up—just readings all week. You let out a sigh of relief. You call up that friend and go out for celebratory margaritas. This is your second mistake.

Ten Reasons I'm Happy Even Though School Starts Tomorrow and I'm Probably Going to Fail Everything

  1. Since I make so many midnight runs to the 24-hour Starbucks on 82nd and Quaker, the barista who works the graveyard shift remembers me. We're basically best friends now. 'Sup, Thomas.
  2. I've been rereading Magical Thinking because it's on my list and I'm falling in love all over again. It's my favorite book (that's not Harry Potter) and stories like "Beating Raoul" and "Mark the Shrink" are reminding me why that is.
  3. I just bought this hoodie and this shirt for less than what the hoodie costs by itself thanks to a ballin' coupon I got when I was at Gap a couple of weeks ago. Constantly meandering through the mall has its perks.
  4. Switched shifts with a girl at work so I can actually make it to volleyball this week! And we're playing two games! Yay volleyball!
  5. I bought Two Door Cinema Club's album Beacon a couple of days ago, and let's talk about true love.
  6. Denny and D-Dad treated my aunts, uncle, and I to dinner at Rosa's tonight. It was nice to sit and talk with them as I am generally too busy to see them ever.
  7. Literally just got a free coffee. Like, as I was typing number five he was asking me if I wanted another white chocolate mocha and who am I to turn down a free latte? Honestly, this Starbucks has the best staff ever.
  8. This is legitimately the best nonfat, no whip white chocolate mocha I've ever had. I told Ralph this and he said, "That's why I'm the master!"
  9. A Very Potter Senior Year was FINALLY released on YouTube. I'm not finished watching it yet (as it's, like, five hours long), but it's so, so great.
  10. This tweet.

Actual conversation with 24-hour drive-thru Starbucks guy

Me: Do a lot of people come through here at night?

Him: Yeah, actually. We've gotten a lot of business lately. I think it has a lot to do with prom season.

Me: Ah.

Him: Yeah, I–are you still in high school or college or. . . ?

Me: I'm in college.

Him: Okay, I'll just say this then–I hate teenagers! I cannot stand them! Like, have you seen Drive? That Ryan Gosling movie?

Me: No, I haven't.

Him: Okay, well, there's this one part when Ryan Gosling just snaps and kills this guy in an elevator. But he doesn't just kill him–he, like, snaps his neck and then smashes his face in. Anyway, this kid came through tonight–scrawny, little, peach fuzz, not even a beard at all!

Me: Oh, that's bad.

Him: Thought he knew everything. He was trying to tell me how to use the cash register and I was just like I WORK HERE. I just wanted to pull him through the window and smash his face Ryan Gosling style.

Me: *laughs*

Him: I hate teenagers.

Me: Well, luckily I turned twenty a few weeks ago, so I'm no longer an annoying teenager.

Him: Yes! I like you now!

April 25: Bits

Today, the high was 102 degrees. Summer is fast-approaching, and I am not pleased or prepared.

After I got off work, I drove to the Starbucks on Quaker and picked up a venti nonfat no whip white chocolate mocha in preparation to stay up all night working (again). While waiting at the window for my coffee, I was struck with a random story inspiration that I will hopefully get to write after these next few weeks are over. If I am actually able to finish it (because I am not good at the finishing part of writing stories) and it doesn't suck (it probably will), I will share it with you.

There are these new Dinamita Nachos Picoso Doritos and they are really good. New unhealthy addiction alert.

I am scheduled to work an eight hour and forty-five minute shift on Saturday–fifteen minutes short of getting a lunch. This is the second time this has happened. I am now on a mission to kill all the things.

Last night, I found out the entire series of Star Trek: The Next Generation is available on Netflix Instant. All I want to do is snuggle up and watch Captain Picard be awesome, but I must finish these next three weeks first.

And it ain't hard to believe in love in the city of lights.

Sitting in Starbucks. Sipping a white chocolate mocha. Listening to Bon Iver Pandora. Frantically working through my math homework. Wishing I had a sweater.

Tomorrow is my first math test, which I am hoping upon hope that I do not fail. You should hope the same.

After my usual eight to five school day, I have to drive straight to work where I will be until ten-thirty. So that's fun. Upon arriving home, I will I have to study for my second Spanish composition that will take place Friday morning.

But then, after all that crap, I will leave for Austin.

Yes, please.
